Important Information for Users

We provide access to most of our newspapers in electronic or microfilm formats (which include nearly complete runs of most titles) in our reading room in order to save wear and tear on these fragile historical materials.

Original copies of our newspapers can be examined by appointment in the NJH&GC reading room. This material is open for research without restriction. Newspapers may be copied for use in individual scholarly or personal research. However, as with all materials in the History Center, researchers are responsible for obtaining copyright permission to use material from the collection. Newspapers may not be photocopied as they are oversized and fragile. Digital cameras can be used to capture images of materials. We reserve the right to refuse access to certain fragile materials.(Many newspapers have become brittle over time and cannot be handled.)

About our Historical Newspaper Collection

The North Jersey History and Genealogy Center has a significant collection of historical newspaper titles in various formats dating from 1779 to the present. Some of our earliest papers are from the original Morristown Library and Lyceum that burned down in 1914.  The collection consists mostly of northern New Jersey newspapers from the 19th and early 20th century. We have the full run of the Daily Record (which began as The Morristown Record) from 1900 to the present on microfilm.  The Jerseyman and the True Democratic Banner, two important Morris County newspapers published in Morristown from the mid 19th to early 20th centuries, are available in nearly complete runs. We offer Newark Evening News from 1893 to 1945 on microfilm, and other many other titles from New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Also available is access to the historical New York Times 1851-2013 on microfilm from the Library's media department, and Harper's Weekly online.

Most of our historical Morris County newspapers are indexed.  These indexes were created over time by volunteers and history center staff members before the papers were digitized. They consist of general, death and marriage entries, which indicate the exact date of publication and page number. Our hand-compiled indexes are invaluable research tools and can be of great help in locating information.

Our library provides obituary indexes (1935 - 2016 and some news indexes (1993-2004) for the Daily Record.

Newspaper titles in electronic formats are keyword searchable.

  Morris County Newspapers

One of our earlier newspapers, The Genius of Liberty, published in Morristown, dates from 1798. The True Democratic Banner and The Jerseyman, two newspapers also published in Morristown, provide in depth coverage and editorials on the Civil War, and 1917-19 issues of The Jerseyman chronicle Morris County's involvement in the actions of WWI. The New Jersey Freeman, published in Boonton from 1844 to 1850, was the state's first abolitionist newspaper. The Daily Record, which began publication in 1900, provides a century of Morris County news reports and obituaries.

Several Morris County newspapers are indexed from 1849-1923. The Daily Record is indexed from 1930 to the present and is continually updated. We also offer general news indexes for The Daily Record from 1993 to 2004. These indexes are organized by subject. (See Index list below.)

  Newspapers outside Morris County

Among our holdings are The Newark Evening News from 1893 to 1945 on microfilm, which offers a wealth of news reports and obituaries for northern New Jersey. We have many issues of Newark's Sentinel of Freedom from 1800 to 1865. Elizabethtown's New Jersey Journal from the late 18th century provided news of events in northern New Jersey in the early American republic. The National Enquirer/Pennsylvania Freeman from 1836 - 1854 was an abolitionist paper published in Philadelphia. The NJH&GC also holds physical volumes of Harper's Weekly from 1857 to 1899, which was published in New York. The entire series from 1857 to 1912 can be viewed online in our reading room via our online subscription to Harpweek.
