Join us as the National Society of Arts and Letters host author and lecturer Barry Thomson, as he outlines historic Blairsden and The Schiff Nature Preserve’s upcoming ‘Farm to Table’ event. Blairsden and the Schiff Nature Preserve in Mendham share several historical and physical connections. Both properties were originally developed as grand country estates during the so-called “Country House Era” by socially prominent families that knew one another, and both properties are situated along the flowing waters of the North Branch of the Raritan River. Barry Thomson was a contributor to the two-volume New Jersey Country Houses (Mountain Colony Press, 2004-5) that outlines many of these fantastic homes and will be on hand to talk about Blairsden’s architectural and historical relevance. He has worked with The Mansion in May, The Historical Society of the Somerset Hills and The Arc of NJ among other groups and charities.
The National Society of Arts and Letters is a national not-for-profit organization that encourages and provides financial assistance to talented young artists at the beginning of their careers. Founded seventy five years ago in Washington, DC, the NSAL is comprised of fourteen chapters representing all regions of the United States. Members of NSAL are men and women engaged professionally in the arts, or who want to actively support the work of young artists. The New Jersey chapter regularly holds programming of the visual and performing arts in the Library.
