NJ’s Great Swamp is nestled within a 55-square-mile natural basin, 25 miles from NYC. It’s a quiet, undisturbed place providing a home for more than 200 bird species, many mammals, and a wide variety of reptiles, amphibians and fish. In 1959, the Port Authority of New York announced plans to build a huge international jetport in the swamp. This “done deal” proposal, would have filled in the swamp, demolished 700 homes, and changed the NJ landscape forever. But a small group of concerned citizens opposed the threat and won!

This award-winning one-hour documentary tells the story of the events, people & politics behind the struggle to preserve this beautiful area between 1959 and 1968. USA Today called this fascinating film “a truly astonishing and entertaining history lesson.” Part of our September “Great Swamp” events with the Great Swamp Watershed Association.
