We will be discussing the novel American Spy by Lauren Wilkinson. In 1986 Marie Mitchell, a young, black FBI agent, is recruited by the CIA to get close to the president of Burkina Faso,the object of a possible coup. Since her career is going nowhere due to the old boys’ network, she takes on the job in this fast-paced, beautifully written spy thriller/literary novel that defies the genre by addressing social issues such as race, gender and American intervention.
