When Joy needs a project to fill up her summer days, she seeks out her grandfather to help. Together they decide to fix up an old bicycle for Joy. Little by little, the two find everything they need to transform the rusty old bike into a one-of-a-kind vehicle. Ornamented with streamers, cards in the spokes, and a brand-new bell, the bike carries Joy through the neighborhood, filling the air with its own kind of joyful music. But when some kids tease Joy about her unique DIY bike, she makes an impulsive decision. However, she soon realizes that being the same is boring and definitely doesn’t make her feel JOY. Maybe, with Granddad’s help, Joy can get back on track to being true to herself–sparkles and all. This tender story by Sherri Duskey Rinker eschews trying to fit in with the crowd.
