Join us for the latest “Virtual Classics Book Club” on February 11 when we will be discussing “Their Eyes Were Watching God” by Zora Neale Hurston in celebration of Black History Month. Considered by many as one of the most important books of the 20th century, this classic of the Harlem Renaissance movement explores the story of Janie Crawford’s “ripening from a vibrant, but voiceless, teenage girl into a woman with her finger on the trigger of her own destiny.” (National Endowment of the Arts) As bestselling author Zadie Smith puts it, this book is a “deeply soulful novel that comprehends love and cruelty, and separates the big people from the small of heart, without ever losing sympathy for those unfortunates who don’t know how to live properly.”

What is the “Virtual Classics Book Club,” you may ask? There are many classic books we’ve all meant to read (or re-read), and the “VCBC” is a fun way to fulfill that goal. We meet online on the 2nd Thursday of the month at 7pm and share our thoughts, good, bad, or indifferent, about the “classic of the month” and the author.

How do you attend online? We meet via Zoom, which can be used via telephone or through the Zoom app, which you can download from their website or from your preferred device’s App store and then use on your computer, tablet, phone, etc. Please email james.collins@mmt.mainlib.org and include your full name and town of residence to be placed on our Contacts List; prior to each month’s meeting you will receive an email with the book info and access details you will need. (If you have any difficulty downloading the app, you can email our Reference Desk for help at info@jfpl.org, or call 973-538-2592.)

The “Virtual Classics Book Club” is open to all, whether you live in Morristown or Morris Township or halfway across the country or world, and we look forward to your joining us!

P.S. Didn’t get a chance to finish or read this month’s book classic, but hoping to join in? Go for it!
