It’s back! Our popular “Foreign Film Series” moves online!!

You asked for it, you’ve got it! One of the Library’s most popular programs has been our “Foreign Film Series.” Now in its fourth year, the series has been featuring a variety of entertaining and thought-provoking films, four in the spring and four in the fall, from Europe, Latin America, Africa, Asia, and the Middle East.

Since we can’t come together to watch these films in person, we’re taking the series online, but with some new twists. Ahead of each meeting of the new, bi-weekly “Foreign Film Lovers Club,” we’ll let you know the two films we’ll be discussing at the next online meeting. All the films will be available FREE to Morristown & Morris Township cardholders through the Library’s subscription to Kanopy, a movie streaming platform (https://mmt.kanopy.com/).  Note: If you are from a different town, check if your local library has a Kanopy subscription. In addition, www.justwatch.com, lets you enter a movie title and see the different streaming options for that movie, i.e. Amazon Prime, Hulu.

Before each meeting, we’ll share links to reviews of the movies and to YouTube interviews with the writers, directors, and actors, to look at if you want either before or after the club meets. We’ll come together, talk about what we liked – or didn’t like – about the films, and share with each other about other films that you and we have seen. And by the way: We’re all busy, so don’t worry if you’re not able to watch either or both of films all the way through!

Our first meetup will be Wednesday, June 17, 2020, at 7pm EST, and the theme is “Women of a Certain COMING-OF Age,” a mashup of a few themes, actually. Our two featured films are “The Midwife,” starring two giants of French cinema, Catherine Deneuve and Catherine Frot, and “Gloria,” Chile’s Academy Award entry for Best Foreign Language Film in 2014. (This movie was so well-regarded that it was remade into an English-language version starring Julianne Moore and John Turturro in 2018.)

How do you attend online? We will be using a free app called GoToMeeting. You can either dial in by phone or access the program via your computer or tablet using the GoToMeeting app.

New to GoToMeeting? Get the app at https://global.gotomeeting.com/install/739338205. GoToMeeting also helps you download the app with easy follow-along instructions at https://support.logmeininc.com/gotomeeting/get-ready, and it even checks to make sure your computer can support it!

Access to the program, via telephone or the app, requires an access code. Please email the program presenter at louis.munoz@mmt.mainlib.org and include in your email your full name and town of residence to receive the access code. If you have any difficulty downloading the app, you can email our Reference Desk for help at info@jfpl.org.

Looking forward to seeing you online! Don’t forget to bring the popcorn!
