In Mandarin Chinese, the word 倒 (dào – “upside down/reverse”) is pronounced the same as the word 到 (dào – “to arrive”). You’ll often see upside-down calligraphy of certain lucky words hung on windows and doors during Lunar New Year – which starts February 12 – to invite in good fortune. Welcome the new year with these decorations featuring the characters (chūn – “Spring”) and 牛年 (Niú nián – “Year of the Ox”)!
